Advice:

  • You do not have to agree to anything you don’t feel comfortable with
  • Police, health workers and others will not and do not call at your house to test for coronavirus or ask for money regarding investigations
  • Check the person calling at your door has valid identification, even if they are dressed in uniform
  • Do not transfer any money across to someone who calls you over the phone, banks will not ask for your personal security details
  • Do not trust anyone asking for money transfers or cash over the phone
  • Do not make shopping purchases from a company or person you do not know and trust. Use a credit card to pay to protect yourselves.


Norfolk Assistance Scheme

Due to the coronavirus situation, a coordinated emergency relief response has been developed for Norfolk people in crisis.  The Norfolk Assistance Scheme can help with an urgent need for:

  • Urgent food, emergency cash or household items such as white goods or beds
  • Urgent help with shopping, medication and other tasks – If you have no one to assist you, the Norfolk Assistance Scheme will arrange a delivery of food and refer you to the Covid-19 Community Response Team who will find support to help you with tasks like getting shopping, picking up prescription medication, and dog-walking. Also, welfare check calls (by telephone or on the doorstep) can be requested.
  • Urgent help with gas and electricity costs – You may be able to get help with fuel costs. Also contact your fuel supplier straight away if you’re behind with payments of your gas or electricity bills. See Citizens Advice for help if you’re on a pre-payment meter, have run out of credit and need gas or electricity urgently.

Who is eligible for help via the Norfolk Assistance Scheme?

You must be a Norfolk resident aged 16 or over to apply for the Norfolk Assistance Scheme and you’ll be asked a set of questions to check if you’re eligible.
You may be eligible if you:
• Receive or have applied for an income-related benefit (including those who are self-employed or have recently been laid off work)
• Have ceased working and awaiting salary payment through the government scheme
• Have dependent children
• Have a disability or mental health problem
• Are fleeing domestic violence
• Need help to remain in the community
• Are part of a planned resettlement scheme (removals are suspended through NAS, but we can assess you for van hire/alternative removal companies)

How to apply

Requests for emergency cash or food due to the coronavirus situation should be made via phone on 01603 223392 (option 5) so they can be prioritised. Please be patient, as they are experiencing high call volumes.

Community support

North Walsham Good Neighbour Scheme

The GNS are offering a range of support for those with nobody else to call on including frequent befriending telephone calls, shopping, dog walking, collecting medication.  Tel 01692 558321 for help or if  you would like to volunteer.

Volunteer to support the Coronavirus (Covid-19) response

Voluntary Norfolk, Momentum and Community Action Norfolk are working with Norfolk County Council and local health providers to recruit volunteers for a county wide effort to respond to the Coronavirus (Covid-19 crisis. We are particularly keen to hear from people who have the skills to volunteer in health and social care roles, which have been identified as priority areas.

  • When you register, tick the COVID-19 (Coronavirus) Call for Volunteers box, as your Area of Interest.
  • You only need to complete the mandatory fields, but please make sure you include your phone number.
  • After you submit your details, you will receive a call back in due course from a member of our Covid-19 Volunteering Response Team to discuss what you can offer, what volunteers are needed in your local area and the next steps. Please be aware that this may take a bit of time as we coordinate our efforts with our partners
  • You may also be contacted by a VCSE organisation directly if they think you would be a good fit for their Covid-19 volunteering role.

Dementia support at Furze Hill, North Walsham

The Salvation Army have had to close the respite days and Cameo sessions have also ceased until further notice.
